Twelve sessions make a good first season: long enough to build a habit, short enough that people commit to it. Here is a plan you can copy, whether you meet weekly or every two weeks. The themes are prompts: the person picking chooses the film.
| Session | Theme | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A crowd pleaser everyone can agree on | Keep it short and set the rules |
| 2 | A film from the year you were born | Whoever is picking shares why |
| 3 | A film from a country no one has chosen yet | Check subtitles work for everyone |
| 4 | A debut film | Compare it with what came later |
| 5 | A film you loved as a kid | Does it still hold up? |
| 6 | Mid-season: pick from the group's shared list | Look back at your scores so far |
| 7 | A film from before 1960 | Set expectations about the pace |
| 8 | A documentary | Ask what it chose not to show |
| 9 | A film that split the critics | Vote before reading anything |
| 10 | A remake or its original | Watch both if you have the energy |
| 11 | A film no one in the group has seen | No trailers allowed |
| 12 | Season finale: the group's highest rated director | Hand out the awards |
Draw the order at the first session and write it down, so everyone knows their turn in advance. If someone misses their turn, they swap with the next person. Sessions 1, 6 and 12 belong to the whole group.
Don't cancel for one absence, or the season will stall. Absent members watch on their own, vote afterwards and catch up on the conversation. Skip a date only if fewer than half can make it.
If you record every vote, most of these awards work themselves out. On Cinema Circle the archive and stats keep track of this for you, and the next cinema night card holds the date of each session.
Eight to twelve sessions works well. Long enough to build a habit, short enough that people can commit.
Every one or two weeks during a season. If that's too much, use the same plan monthly: it becomes a one-year schedule.
