A movie club needs very little: a few people, a date and a film. What it does need is a shape, because a club without one fades after the third meeting. These are the decisions worth making on day one.
Three is enough to disagree. Above eight, the conversation splits and scheduling gets harder. Invite people who will actually show up, not everyone who says it sounds fun. You can always grow later.
A theme makes picking easier and gives people something to compare. It doesn't need to be clever.
Pick something short and easy to talk about, not the most difficult film you know. Set a start time and stick to it. When it ends, have everyone give a score before anybody talks, then go around the room. Finish by choosing who picks next and setting the next date while everyone is still there.
A spreadsheet works for the first few films. Cinema Circle is a free option if you want the votes, the archive and the next night in one place: create a club, share the invite link and add your first film.
Three to eight works best. Two people can do it too, and larger groups work with a poll for choosing films.
Every two weeks or once a month is easy to keep up. What matters most is that the next date is always set.
Take turns, draw a name at random or run a poll. A loose theme makes the choice quicker.
